What is cellulite?

Demi Lovato, a celebrated singer and actress recently took it to social media and announced that she has cellulite. “Cellulite and yet I still love myself” read her post followed by a series of pictures. A lot of celebrities and women, in general, strive for that perfect body and tend to hide these imperfections for fear of being judged harshly. Cellulite affects more than 90% of women and 10% of men worldwide. This literally means that almost anyone can develop cellulite whether thin or thick, tall or short, young or old. No matter one’s ethnicity, religion or social standing, we are all predisposed.Cellulite is a condition by which the skin appears as if it’s lumpy and uneven. Also known as orange-peel skin, it affects more females than men due to variance in body fat distribution, connective tissues and muscle.

How does cellulite form?

Fat cells next to the arteries on the thighs, buttocks, stomach or arms take in extra nutrients that spill from the arteries. As they absorb the nutrients, they become bigger and bigger. This accumulation of fat causes the fat cells to become plump thus requiring more blood supply. The fat pushes out the skin from muscle beneath it causing an orange peel appearance on the skin otherwise refers to cellulite.

Cellulite comes from your fat cells being too big and/or the connecting tissues not stretching enough bringing about the dimpled appearance. Fat cells become overinflated from the increase in fat storage. The fat pokes through the skin through a web of connective tissues. This also happens when connective tissue between the skin and muscles is weakening; fat cells shift and push through the skin.

Let’s take an example of a mattress; when it is new it looks all good, flat and even but when you try to add more cotton in the padding layer, it bulges and produces an uneven surface. That’s exactly what happens to our skin.

The skin stretches as more fat accumulates,  giving it a cottage cheese appearance.

Factors linked to the likelihood of getting cellulite

Gender

Women are more likely to get cellulite as compare to men. This is because men have thicker and more bands connecting their skin and muscle as compare to females. Bands form a crisscrossed pattern to keep men’s fat in place, while women have vertical patterns. Women have larger amounts of fat just below the skin thus explaining why cellulite is mostly referred to as an ‘exclusively women’s condition’

Hormones

Estrogen hormone in women is also a determinant as it leads to enlargement of fat cells. It is highly produced during puberty and pregnancy. A woman is much more likely to get cellulite during pregnancy due to the rapid weight gain. Insulin is another hormone promotes weight gain and opposed to weight loss thus if it is in high levels in the body can lead to cellulite.

Genetics

Heredity traits can either be positive or negative. Unfortunately, chances of getting cellulite go up significantly if your relatives like your mother or grandmother have it. This, however, is not a guarantee as there are so many factors have to consider as your health and lifestyle choices.

Age

A human being’s skin reaches maximum thickness at age 30. After this stage, the skin starts to thin and loosen making it more likely for fat tissues to bulge through the skin and cause a bumpy appearance.

Lifestyle choices

Healthy lifestyle minimal chances of acquiring cellulite. Exercise helps reduce the size of the fat cells into smaller and less dangerous sizes leading to a decrease of pressure towards the connective tissues. Minor exercise incorporates into your daily routine can do wonders with your circulatory system by strengthening it and thus enabling effective pumping of blood throughout the body.

Diet

It goes without saying that unhealthy fatty foods should avoid not only for the sake of avoiding cellulite but for general body well-being. Eating a healthy diet helps in flushing out unwanted fats and toxins since clean eating boosts collagen and nutrients levels.

Common myths associated with cellulite

Toxins cause cellulite: this is a lie because cellulite is forming by excess fat cells accumulating and pushing towards the skin. This myth has led to so many people buying products meant to detoxify their bodies but they ended up with a cleansed body with cellulite. A person needs to understand the cause so as to be in a position to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Cellulite affects big bodied people only: false. Cellulite does not discriminate. Whether you are plump or thin or tall or short; you can have cellulite, no one is safe or guaranteed immunity against it. Slender persons also have cellulite though in plump people it is more common.

Creams get rid of cellulite forever: there is no cure for cellulite. What you can do is to reduce the appearance of the orange peel like skin so that is becoming less visible. Creams help in thickening the skin thus concealing the cellulite.

Your eating habits have no relation to cellulite: ever heard of the phrase ‘you are what you eat’? Well, it is true. The type of food you consume determines your health, body size, and weight. Excessive fats are accumulating in the body if you consume a lot of unhealthy fats leading to the presence of cellulite on the skin.

Only old people can get cellulite: while older people are more susceptible to get cellulite due to the fact that their skin is worn out and thin, it does not necessarily mean that young people can’t get cellulite. Apart from age other factors like genetics, stress and hormones play a major role in the formation of the cottage cheese like skin.

The smoking cigarette has no connection to cellulite: cigarette smoke contains a toxic mix of chemicals that can disrupt the body’s ability to produce collagen. This, in turn, makes the skin less elastic and prompts the underlying fat to show through.

Appearance on the body

Cellulite is mostly found in the lower parts of the body or on the abdomen since these are the designated storage body parts for excess fats. Adipocytes cells hold excess fats in the body until it is necessary for the production of energy. Metabolism is a process through which the body converts fats into energy required for normal body functions. Fats are important as they help in maintaining a steady body temperature, helps in brain development as well as reducing inflammation.

For males and females, the number of fat storage cells in the body is already determined by late adolescence. In case of excess fats in the body, the already present fat cells take up more fats since they no longer increase in number. This causes them to grow bigger and bigger leading to weight gain. Weight loss can achieve when a person exercises or goes through dieting or fasting. The fats are taken from storage and used to produce energy for the body making the fats cells reduce in size.

Estrogen hormone in women causes fat stores in the lower parts of the body that is legs, thighs, and buttocks. This is the reason why cellulite is most common in these areas in women. If excess fat is consumed, it is stored in the adipocytes fat cells and excess fats cause bulging. Testosterone hormone in men leads to storage of fats in the abdomen areas which can cause a pot belly which if not properly managed can lead to life-threatening conditions. This is because in men the fat develops around body organs as opposed to fat for a woman which is present just below the skin layer.

How does it look like?

This picture is a common sight for most people. We see it in our bodies, a friend’s body, a sister’s body or even random people we meet at the beach or spas. That is how a cellulite looks like. In some cases, it is not as visible while in others it is more pronounced. The numerous pumps and depressions on the skin lead to the nicknames ‘orange peel appearance’ ‘cottage cheese appearance’ and ‘mattress phenomenon ’.

To most people, it appears out of nowhere. One day you are busy taking a shower then as you are scrubbing your thighs you see some bumps. It catches you off guard. It’s cellulite!

It makes you uncomfortable?

Society has set the bar so high in regard to how women should look, act, eat, exercise, talk, react or sleep. In the media, we see women with perfect bodies and even tone skin thus creating the illusion that that’s what an ideal lady should look like. Having cellulite is frowned upon as it indicates that one is eating unhealthy, is overweight or isn’t taking care of their bodies as they are supposed to.

We have all seen pictures of celebrities with cellulite being taken by people in beaches and posted on social media as part of body shaming. This has created a self-conscious ritual in ladies that makes them conceal themselves with beach cover-ups to avoid being embarrassed. If a lady has cellulite on her thighs, shorts and skirts become a thing of the past and if by chance they wear them, they will always be looking around; self-conscious and when they see someone looking at them they start imaging the worst.

Apart from being embarrassed, cellulite makes a person uncomfortable as it can lead to deformity in which the legs, stomach, thighs and buttocks and in some severe cases, it gives rise to nervous pressure which results to severe pain.

Levels of cellulite

Depending on how noticeable it is, cellulite can categorize into 3 stages. Treatment depends on which level the patient’s cellulite is at;

    1. The first stage is seen only when flexing muscles in the applicable area or when you pinch a part of the skin and it’s visible.
    2. The second stage can identify when muscles are at rest.
    3. The third stage shows dents on the skin and hills that are visible at all times.

How to get rid of cellulite

After discovering that cellulite is affecting your life negatively, it’s time that you look for ways to get rid of it. Many women have had their self-esteem lowered down because of cellulite. Cellulite can occur to both skinny and fat people so just relax, it’s a common problem. Unfortunately, cellulite can also be genetic so there is a high chance that it can be passed on. Cellulite cannot be cured but you can try to make it less conspicuous.

Luckily, there are many ways you can find to try and eliminate this embarrassing cellulite.

Drinking alcohol regularly is a risky affair to your overall health. Alcohol will form multiple fatty tissues. These fatty tissues highly contribute to the formation of cellulite. It would be a good idea if you just minimize or just give up on alcohol. Smoking too maybe the reason you are having a bumpy butt or thigh. Smoking hinders blood flow and hence fat distribution also gets harder and therefore cellulite is bound to form on your skin. You may find that stopping these unhealthy behaviors is a daunting task but moderation is the key. Smoking and drinking alcohol can take in moderation, for example, you can choose to avoid their triggers or seek professional help.

Being inactive could also trigger the formation of cellulite. If you have been inactive for most of your time then it’s time that you consider doing some exercises. These embarrassing bumps are like a structural hindrance. Unless this problem is solved then cellulite are bound to recur over and over again. Exercising and losing some weight can help you in clearing cellulite. If you are not so used to working out then you could try with a small routine just to get the psyche to continue and do more.

You can also try to change your diet. Avoid taking fried food too regularly. Foods that are rich in antioxidants are good for improving the growth of collagen which helps in tightening of the skin. Foods rich in vitamins C, B3 or E are best for skins elasticity.  Moreover, these are not the only ways you can use to get rid of cellulite. Some others include cellulite creams, cellulite oil, massage, exercise, and surgery.

Cellulite Creams

The internet is richly jam-packed with information on cellulite creams. Most sources promote various creams claiming that they cure cellulite. Well, these are just a good marketing strategy because cellulite cannot fully reduce by applying creams. Some of these marketers just exaggerate the functioning of the creams in an attempt to make you purchase the creams. The reviewers too do not explain fully how the creams cure their cellulite. You could waste a lot of money trying to get the best cellulite cream. This is because the creams are made for different skin types and different levels of cellulite formation. Finding the right fit for you might take a while.

Most of these creams contain retinol and caffeine. These two are claimed to be the most effective ingredients in clearing cellulite. Retinol is known to stimulate collagen production. Caffeine on the other hand, is known to stimulate blood flow, therefore, fat cells are distributed evenly. An additional ingredient known as aminophylline is commonly found in these cellulite creams. This ingredient is chemically based and it dehydrates the skin to make it appear tight and toned.

  • It is inexpensive as compared to other methods like liposuction
  • Easy to use as one only needs to put cream on fingers and start massaging the affected area.

Cellulite oils

In this case, the oils that are used to help clear cellulite are essential oils. Essential oils are known to offer help in almost all problems. They are said to be healthy and full of benefits. You can add these oils to your bath water to clear cellulite. These oils act by releasing toxins and promoting circulation in the skin. A good circulation ensures that fat cells are distributed evenly throughout the body. These oils are readily available in any outlets and there are so many varieties.

If you are out to shop for the best cellulite oil, consider getting more advice from an aromatherapist. The expert can be able to recommend the best oil in relation to your type of skin. Do not apply the oil directly to your skin. Be sure to mix the cellulite oil in your favorite carrier oil such as coconut oil. Stop using the oil if you get an irritation on the affected area. It may contain ingredients that you are allergic to.

Cellulite oils are however not a permanent solution to cellulite. Although they are just temporary, accompanying them with exercise can bring a better and longer lasting change. Some of these oils are jojoba oil, fennel oil, rosemary oils etc.

Dry brushing

This involves taking a soft bristled brush and moving it around your body in circular motions to give your skin a fresher, plumper look. It is usually done on dry skin most preferably before you take a shower. The skin becomes plump therefore concealing the cellulite.

Make sure the brush has a long handle when you purchase so that you can be able to reach places like your back. This procedure can do once or several times a week.

  • After dry brushing, the skin is left looking radiant and plump
  • It helps in flushing out of toxins and waste by activating the lymphatic system.
  • Makes skin to be more prone to remain moisturized and hydrated by removing dry and dead skin cells.

  • It conceals the cellulite for hours thus does not provide a permanent solution.
  • Choosing the right brush to use is very vital as it can cause skin irritation.
  • This method is not suitable for people who suffer from eczema, acne or have sensitive skin.

Massage

This is one of the most interesting ways of trying to get rid of your cellulite. I mean who doesn’t love massages? A good massage could give you 3 to 4 days of free cellulite thighs. Well, not much, but it can save a day. If for example, you are planning to go to a beach party soon, then you need to have your massage more often.

Massages work by improving blood circulation, getting rid of toxins and deducting the number of fluids around the cellulite affected areas. A massage compresses fat tissues just temporarily.  Deep tissue massage therapy involves putting pressure on the deep layers of muscle that helps in treating a variety of ailments. This pressure induces the body for releasing muscle tension. It should be accompanied by exercises and changing diets. There are two types; hand or manual massage and mechanical massage.

Deep tissue massage is the best when it comes to cellulite massage. This is because a lot of pressure is put on the most affected areas of the skin. You may ask. Can I do a cellulite massage on myself? The answer is no. A genuine cellulite massage comes with a little pinch and only an expert can do it.

  • Helps to maintain a normal blood pressure
  • It is inexpensive
  • It is a natural method thus no side effects

  • Not completely accurate as it needs to use with other methods like exercise and creams to be effective.

Surgery

This method is commonly known as cellulaze. It should handle by a doctor or a cosmetic surgeon. This surgery can take around two hours. A small incision is done on the affected part of the skin. A very small laser probe is inserted underneath the skin through the incision. The laser heats up melting the subcutaneous fat layer below the skin. This method also stimulates the growth of collagen hence improving skin texture and elasticity. The specialists can use local anesthesia.

This is approved by FDA and requires you to be physically and economically capable. This is because the method can cost you up to 5,000 dollars. This might not be the solution that will last forever but it can last up to six years. So if you are tired of using different creams, oils and exercises with no change then this might be the best option for you.

  • Stimulation of collagen leading to more attractive thick and tight skin
  • No discomfort due to use of local anesthesia.
  • The procedure can take as little as an hour and results will achieve with no need for follow-up treatments.

  • Needs commitment in terms of time depending on the degree of cellulite you have.
  • Although it diminishes cellulite for a long time, it is not a permanent solution.
  • Swelling and bruising from points of the incision in the first 12 hours and bruising and tenderness which resolves after 2-3 weeks.

Exercise

Most people hear exercise and they run to look for other ways to get rid of the problem at hand may it be excess weight, blood pressure issues or even cellulite! When it comes to cellulite, exercise is important as it helps to keep the muscles underneath your skin firm thus preventing fats from bulging through the skin. This, in turn, creates a smooth surface on your skin.

Strength training is the secret to diminishing the appearance of that stubborn cellulite. It involves the use of resistance to stimulate muscular contractions, which in turn help in endurance, building strength and increases the size of skeletal muscles.

Exercise goes hand in hand with healthy eating and hydration so make sure once you embark on this journey; drink water regularly to avoid dehydration and also mind what you eat.

Try exercises like; single leg hamstring, Brazilian lunge, clockwork lunge, alternating abduction squats and squats with calf raise. These will help you in strength training.

  • Exercise-related injuries which happen even to the best.
  • Intense exercise can lead to scarring of heart tissues or irregular heartbeat due to weakened muscles.

There are special exercises you can do, specifically targeted to get rid of thigh fat while maintaining healthy muscle tone. The following exercises were designed to target the thigh area and will be beneficial for those who want to lose thigh fat:

1. SQUATS

Squats can be performed with or without weights. If you train in a gym, place a bar with light weights, (5 – 10 lbs) on your shoulders, keep your feet shoulder-width apart, and slowly bend your knees. Keeping your back straight and your eyes straight ahead, go down until you feel a healthy stretch in your thigh muscles. Hold for a few seconds and slowly return to the starting position. Start with five repetitions and build up to a total of fifteen. If you exercise at home, grab a broom handle with the same movements.

2. LUNGES

Hold a dumbbell of 5 – 8 lbs in each hand. With feet planted shoulder-width apart, take a step forward and lunge until the back knee is close to the floor. Hold for three seconds and return to the starting point. Repeat as for squats above.

3. INNER THIGH EXTENSION

Lean on a chair back or counter to maintain balance and slowly lift the outer leg outwards, hold for three seconds and left another inch or so. Hold for three seconds and return to starting position. Do five repetitions and work up to fifteen. Do the same for the other leg. Here are some inner thigh exercises you can do at home.

4. HIP EXTENSIONS

Facing the counter, place both hands on the counter for support, with legs hip-width apart. Slowly lift first the one leg and then the other backward until a pull is felt. Hold for three seconds and return to starting position. Repeat for three repetitions and work up to fifteen.

Most Effective Treatment to Get Rid of Cellulite

This depends on two factors: how you are financially and how urgent is it for you to get rid of the cellulite.

The fastest treatment for cellulite is cellulaze as it gets rid of cellulite for years to come. It is safe and approved by the FDA. It is long lasting and it doesn’t eat up much of your time. However, it is only available to people with deep pockets as the procedure is quite expensive. The average person will not be able to raise funds to cover the cost for such treatment.

The best treatment for cellulite and for you as a person is exercise, clean eating, and hydration. This seems too much for some people but the benefits are worth it. Exercising not only helps you lessen the appearance of cellulite but it also improves body function, your moods, helps fight diseases, better sleep and to top it all, you don’t spend a dime! Exercise strengthens and firms your muscles naturally to help keep the fat cells in check.

Conclusion

Proper cellulite knowledge is the key to solving the nuisance that for many years has become a nightmare for women .Cellulite is an indication that our body is not functioning as effectively or efficiently as it should. For many, it is a wakeup call to start taking steps to determine the cause and working towards becoming a better version of themselves.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for cellulite. The best a person can do is to maintain a healthy lifestyle by clean eating and upholding a regular exercise routine. With this, you make sure you consume the required amount of healthy fats like omega 3 and those excess fats are eliminating by burning of calories through exercise.

You can also try other ways of dealing with cellulite like cellulaze, creams and oil that help to diminish the appearance of the cellulite.

Unfortunately, you can’t stop it before it starts as it’s impossible to determine when it will happen. But, if you don’t have any, you can prevent them from maintaining a regular body fat count to avoid extra storage of fat in the adipocytes tissues.
